On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 153rd birth anniversary, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged people to avoid violence by adhering to his Ahimsa (non-violence) ideals.
Notably, the International Day of Nonviolence is observed on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. “On the International Day of Nonviolence, we commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday as well as the universal principles of peace, respect, and dignity. On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Gandhiji, was born. He was a renowned leader of India who devoted his life for the country. Every year, this day is celebrated with great joy to honor the Father of the Nation and remember his ideals, ideas, and philosophy.
The United Nations General Assembly designated October 2nd as International Day of Nonviolence in June 2007.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an important freedom fighter in India. He was the leader of the nonviolent resistance campaign against the British.
He went to South Africa to represent a client after studying law. He joined the Indian National Congress after returning to India. He advocated for women’s rights and against caste discrimination. He also led national campaigns on behalf of peasants, labourers, and farmers.
After 21 years since Gandhi’s death, the United Kingdom issued a stamp in his honour.
Gandhiji was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times but never received it.
Only Gandhiji was the first and only Indian to receive the title ‘Time Person of the Year’ in 1930.
Many world leaders, including the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and John Lennon, regard Gandhiji as their ideal. This is because he fought not just for independence from the British, but also for social issues such as caste discrimination, women’s rights, and so on.
