After Google revealed in January that it was laying off 12,000 workers, or 6% of its overall employment, Sundar Pichai, the company’s CEO, warned that there would be a second round of layoffs. Mr. Pichai said during a Wall Street Journal interview that the company would soon experience additional layoffs, but he avoided addressing the subject explicitly.

Mr. Pichai said: “We’re very, very focused on this set of opportunities we have, and I think there’s a lot of work left.” He was referring to Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard, new Workspace capabilities in Gmail and Google Docs, as well as other projects. A critical inflection point has also arrived for AI. We are prioritising where we can and moving staff to our most important regions, so that effort is ongoing.

When asked how the business planned to boost productivity by 20%, Mr. Pichai responded that it was “literally looking at every aspect of what we do” in an effort to fundamentally re-engineer its cost structure. Even though there has been improvement, he emphasised that more has to be done.

“We are attempting to do that in a variety of ways. Every area of what we do is being examined, and as we stated on our most recent earnings call, we’re considering how to re-engineer our cost base in a durable way. The development of sustainable savings is unquestionably our primary goal. We are happy with the development, but there is still more to be done,” he remarked.

Google made a 12,000 job layoff announcement in January. Even though there had been months of rumours about the layoffs, several employees still found the news shocking.

According to Mr. Pichai, cuts were chosen with great care. “We’ve made the decision to eliminate 12,000 jobs from our staff. A different communication from us was already sent to affected employees in the US. According to Mr. Pichai at the time, this process will take longer in other countries due to their customs and regulations.

Additionally, the corporation was said to have terminated some 450 employees in India’s various departments in February. However, it is unclear if the 12,000 job losses announced by Alphabet Inc. are included in the layoffs.
