According to a report from the Russian news service Tass on January 30, Putin had asked Xi to visit Russia in the spring. The Wall Street Journal stated in the previous month that a trip to Moscow might take place in early April or late April.

Requests for comment on the prospect of Xi visiting Moscow went unanswered right away by the Chinese foreign ministry, and the Kremlin refused to respond.
