A day after the 79-year-old US president tested positive for Covid, his White House physician claimed on Friday that President Joe Biden’s symptoms “have improved” and that his vital values, including blood pressure, are still normal.

Since his diagnosis, Biden has been residing in seclusion at the White House and has frequently stated on social media that he is “feeling okay” and carrying out his presidential responsibilities.

Kevin O’Connor, a doctor, informed the White House press secretary in a memo that “His symptoms have improved.”

Biden’s pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation “remain totally normal,” according to O’Connor, despite the fact that he was still complaining of a runny nose, a cough, and exhaustion.

Biden’s temperature increased significantly Thursday night to 99.4 degrees Fahrenheit (37.4 degrees Celsius), but was treated with acetaminophen, the doctor added, and has since returned to normal.

The antiviral drug Paxlovid, used to lessen the intensity of Covid-19, is one among the treatments that “the president is tolerating well.”

In the United States, where hospitalizations have increased recently, the highly contagious Omicron BA.5 subvariant is currently driving a new Covid wave.

Although Biden is said to be in generally good health, becoming the oldest US president ever elected raises concerns about the effects of Covid.

Biden, like previous presidents, has begun to exhibit signs of stress in recent months as a result of the gruelling workload he was dealing with: his walk is stiffer, his hair is thinner, and his speech is less fluid than it was when he first assumed office.

The midterm elections in November, which are expected to be difficult for his Democratic Party, are only one of the political challenges that Biden is currently facing as president. His personal approval ratings are also decreasing.

Since the president’s diagnosis, the White House has underlined that he had received two booster shots and was completely immunised. O’Connor reaffirmed that he was anticipated to “react favourably” to treatment.

There hasn’t been anything in the course of his illness that has caused him to change his initial expectation, he wrote.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised Biden to continue isolating, and his medical staff would “continue to watch him attentively.”

The president had been Covid-free up until this point, but many of Biden’s family members and close aides had caught the infection.

In direct contrast to his predecessor Donald Trump, he made a point of adhering to stringent Covid regulations upon taking office, holding socially-distant meetings or Zoom gatherings, and donning a mask to public events.

In October 2020, during the tumultuous election campaign he ultimately lost to Biden, then-president Trump tested positive for coronavirus.
