The US military announced Friday that a drone strike was carried out on a “planner” of the Islamic State of Khorasan, the group that claimed responsibility for the deadly suicide bombing at Kabul airport.
“The unmanned airstrike took place in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province. According to early indicators, we killed the target “Central Command Captain Bill Urban stated.
In a statement announcing the first reported US strike since the incident, he said, “We know of no civilian casualties.”
The strike, which was fired from outside Afghanistan, happened as refugees were being flown out of Kabul airport under significantly tighter security following Thursday’s attack.
When a suicide bomber detonated a device in front of the airport’s Abbey Gate, at least 78 persons were murdered, including 13 US military. According to some reports, there were close to 200 fatalities.
Gunmen opened fire after the blast, according to US sources, adding to the bloodshed.
The incident was carried out by the Islamic State’s brutal Afghan branch.
US President Joe Biden promised retaliation in the aftermath of the incident.
“Know this: Those who perpetrated this attack, as well as anybody who wishes America harm, will not be forgiven. We are not going to forget. We’ll track you down and hold you accountable “Biden stated this on Thursday.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Friday afternoon that the group is planning another attack on the airlift.
He stated, “We continue to feel there are genuine threats… particular, credible threats.”
