A motor racing accident in Colorado claimed the life of James Crown, an American businessman, billionaire investor, and longstanding director of JPMorgan Chase, on Sunday as he was celebrating his 70th birthday, according to CNN. According to The Colorado Sun, Mr. Crown perished in the single-vehicle collision at Aspen Motorsports Park near Woody Creek after hitting an impact barrier.

Pitkin County Coroner’s Office issued a news release stating that “the official cause of death is pending autopsy although multiple blunt force trauma is evident.” His cause of death was determined to be an accident.

Notably, Mr. Crown was a frequent traveller to the ski areas of Colorado, and his family owns the Aspen Skiing Co., a company that runs ski areas and mountains in the Aspen area.

The untimely death of Jim Crown has left the Crown family inconsolably distraught. In this trying time, the family asks that their privacy be respected. A family spokesman told the Aspen Times in a statement that more information about the memorial services to honour Jim’s extraordinary life would be revealed at a later time

He received his estimated $10.2 billion fortune through his family’s business, Henry Crown and Company, where he served as president and CEO. The privately held company was first established as a family-owned building materials company in Chicago in 1919. According to its website, the company became one of the biggest privately held enterprises and land developers in the United States “through hard work and perseverance.”

Additionally, he served on the boards of JPMorgan, General Dynamics, and Sara Lee, among others. President Barack Obama appointed Crown to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board in 2014. He also attended the White House State Dinner honouring Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.

Mr. Obama declared that his death had devastated both he and his wife Michelle. He wrote on Twitter, “Jim Crown was a cornerstone of Chicago who sincerely cared about making our city a place where everyone can succeed. He was also incredibly fortunate to be a close friend to Michelle and me. We’re devastated right now, and in this trying time, we send our love to Paula and their wonderful family.

In this extraordinarily trying time, we offer Jim’s family and loved ones our sincere condolences. Additionally, all of you who knew and cherished Jim as much as I did are in our thoughts. His presence will be greatly missed because he was a vital part of JPMorgan Chase and our lives, according to a statement from Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase.

The wife, four kids, and parents of Mr. Crown are all still alive.
