On Monday, the EU Council begins a two-day in-person meeting in Brussels

On the 24th and 25th of May, EU leaders will meet in person in Brussels for a special European Council to discuss pressing issues such as foreign policy, climate change, and COVID-19.

The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. local time on Monday (17:30 GMT). It is expected to focus on the European Union’s foreign policy, particularly with Russia and the United Kingdom, as well as migration, the Middle East, and the upcoming EU-US Summit.

The European Council is expected to discuss possible new sanctions against Russia in the areas of human rights and cybersecurity, while the UK discussion will focus on post-Brexit issues, including the rights and obligations of both parties under the recently concluded EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Climate change and COVID-19, as well as the state of EU-wide coordination, vaccination progress, and digital EU vaccination certificates, are on the agenda for discussion.

Both days’ meetings are expected to conclude with joint press conferences by European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
