The price of rice in Sri Lanka has increased to “unbearable heights” amid the island nation’s unparalleled economic turmoil.

Rice costs in the island nation have increased to unacceptable levels, according to consumers. The general market’s minimum price for a kilo of rice has now surpassed Rs 200-240, according to Colombo Page.

The government has been compelled to prohibit the import of various basic goods, including food items, raising the prices of necessities such as milk powder and rice significantly.

Although the Ministry of Trade announced that rice is being sold at concessionary pricing by wholesale network Lanka Sathosa shops, Colombo Page heard from various CWE stores that imported rice was not fulfilling demand.

It was also stated that Sathosa outlets in several parts of the country are running low on vital consumer commodities such as rice, dried chilies, and other items.

Consumers urged that the government take steps to lower prices, such as importing rice or establishing a price control.

Sri Lanka is in the grip of a severe economic crisis, with food and fuel scarcity affecting a major portion of the island nation’s population. Since the commencement of the COVID-19 epidemic, the economy has been in free fall, resulting in the collapse of the tourism industry. Sri Lanka is also dealing with a foreign exchange deficit, which has hampered its ability to buy food and fuel.
