On Friday night, a large fire erupted at a chemical company in Passaic, New Jersey.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora warned locals to avoid the area of the Qualco chemical factory on 225 Passaic Street, between Route 21 and the Passaic River, in a Facebook Live.

The fire had spread to the Majestic Industries warehouse, which is located close to the chemical factory. Lora said the structure where the fire started is expected to be totally destroyed by 11:00 p.m. He went on to say that the fire had spread to other structures, including one that housed chlorine pellets. It has not, however, made its way to the main building, which holds the majority of the chemicals.

Because of the volume of smoke, the mayor also ordered surrounding neighbours to shut their windows.

“We are quite concerned about the health and safety of folks in the region because this is a chemical fire,” Lora stated.

Firefighters are also assisting with the evacuation of neighbouring neighbours to a safe distance from the fire, according to him. Buses and automobiles have been redirected away from the area, and neighbouring roads have been closed.

The fire’s cause is yet unknown. Lora said one firefighter was brought to the hospital with an injury, but she didn’t have any further details on their condition.

Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey advised residents to keep safe as firefighters battled the eight-alarm fire, which means numerous engine companies were dispatched.

“Keep your windows closed if you live nearby. I’m hoping for the best for our first responders on the site, and I’m praying for their safety “In a tweet, Murphy stated.

Lora reported the fire was escalated to a 10-alarm fire approximately 11:00 p.m.
