What exactly is Amyloidosis?
Amyloidosis is the name given to a group of rare, serious conditions caused by the buildup of the abnormal specific protein amyloid in organs and tissues within the body, according to the National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom.
Amyloid deposits can form in the heart, brain, kidneys, spleen, and other organs.

The accumulation of these amyloid plaques can make it difficult for organs and tissues to function properly. According to the NHS, this can lead to organ failure if not treated.

Mr Musharraf was diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness in the UAE in 2018.

What is the aetiology of Amyloidosis?
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, amyloidosis can develop as a secondary condition or as a primary condition. It is sometimes caused by a gene mutation, but other times the reason of amyloidosis is unknown, according to the study.

Amyloidosis Types
Amyloidosis is classified into several types, the most common of which are:
Amyloidosis of the light-chain (AL): It has the potential to harm the kidneys, spleen, heart, and other organs. People who have multiple myeloma or the bone marrow disorder Wadenstrom’s macroglobulinemia are much more likely to have AL amyloidosis.

AA Amyloidosis is caused by fragments of the amyloid A protein and affects the kidneys in approximately 80% of cases. It can aggravate chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBS).
Amyloidosis due to transthyretin (ATTR): It is possible to inherit it from a family member. Transthyretin, also known as prealbumin, is a protein. It is produced in the liver. Excessive levels of either normal (wild-type ATTR) or genetically mutated transthyretin can result in amyloid deposits.

Amyloidosis Symptoms
Though the disease has some common symptoms, they vary greatly depending on where the amyloid protein accumulates in the body.
