According to a number of media outlets on Tuesday, a US judge has ordered former Vice President Mike Pence to give testimony regarding his conversations with Donald Trump prior to the 2021 assault on the Capitol.

According to rumors, Chief Judge James Boasberg of Washington made the decision that Pence should be compelled to respond to inquiries from a federal grand jury regarding Pence’s possible criminality by the then-president.

According to the reports, Pence can choose not to talk about what he did on the day of the uprising while serving as the Senate’s acting president to certify the victory.

The Justice Department’s investigation into the insurgency, which was linked to a number of fatalities, injured more than 100 police officers, and produced more than 1,000 arrests, marks a partial victory thanks to the decision, which is still under seal.

Trump intends to seek reelection as president in 2024, and Pence has hinted that he might oppose him for the Republican nomination.

Investigations into Trump’s alleged role in inciting the violence on January 6, 2021 are being conducted as part of a broader alleged plot to maintain power after losing the election to Joe Biden.

Pence and Special Counsel Jack Smith, the government’s ostensibly independent prosecutor, may both challenge the portions of the judgement that went against them.

Trump and Pence have been at odds ever since Pence declined to back Trump’s efforts to annul the election. Pence was forced to flee the Capitol after a portion of the pro-Trump mob ordered that he be hanged.

In his memoir “So Help Me God,” which was published last year, Pence detailed many of the pertinent talks he had with Trump. However, he declined to testify before a House committee looking into the uprising.

The judge also dismissed a different claim of executive privilege made by Trump, which shields aides from being compelled to speak about specific conversations with presidents.

Requests for comment from the administrations of Pence and Trump were not quickly fulfilled.

In the race to become the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, Trump is far and away the front-runner.

However, he is in legal peril on several fronts, including a separate federal inquiry into how he handled confidential information, as well as inquiries into Georgian election meddling and a hush money payment.
