Operations on the middle portion of the China-Russia East natural gas pipeline have begun, enabling the transmission of natural gas from the Siberian Power grid in Russia to the smog-prone Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area in northern China.

China Oil & Gas Piping Network Corp (PipeChina) said in a statement on Thursday that the pipeline will also promote economic development alongside the rust-belt areas that the 1,110-kilometer pipeline aims to help improve air quality in the region, where about a quarter of China’s steelmaking capacity is located, by adding 27 million cubic meters of gas supply per day.

This section begins in Jilin’s Changling town and ends in Hebei’s Yongqing town. The pipeline also links the existing gas pipelines in northeastern and northern China, as well as the Dalian, Tangshan, and Liaohe gas storage projects.

According to PipeChina, the northern portion of the China-Russia East gas pipeline began operations in December 2019 and has delivered approximately 4 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas.

In July, China began work on the southern portion of the China-Russia East pipeline, expanding the route to eastern China’s Shanghai.

Once the line is completed by 2025, volumes of Russian gas transported via the pipeline could reach 38 bcm per annum.
