According to the Biden administration, the Chinese government should not be interested in the succession of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. During his weekly press conference, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “We believe the Chinese government should have no role in the Dalai Lama’s succession process.”

“Beijing’s involvement in the Panchen Lama’s succession over 25 years ago, including ‘disappearing’ the Panchen Lama as an infant and attempting to replace him with a PRC (People’s Republic of China) government-chosen successor, remains an outrageous violation of religious freedom,” Price said.

In December, former President Donald Trump signed a bill into law that called for the establishment of a US consulate in Tibet and the creation of an international coalition to ensure that the next Dalai Lama is chosen solely by the Tibetan Buddhist community, free of Chinese intervention.

According to the act, the United States will take all appropriate measures to hold senior Chinese government or Communist Party officials responsible if they interfere with the identification and installation of the future 15th Dalai Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, who will succeed the 14th Dalai Lama.
