According to the group’s co-founder Chopmaster G, Shock G, the frontman of the 1990s hip-hop group Digital Underground and his alter ego “Humpty Hump,” has died. Gregory Jacobs was Shock’s real name, and his death was confirmed by his father, Edward Racker, to TMZ, though no cause was given. He had been 57 years old for some time.

Digital Underground dominated the Bay Area hip-hop scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with hits like “The Humpy Dance” and “Sex Packets.” They did, however, mark the recorded debut of Tupac Shakur, who was a member of the group for a brief period before releasing his solo debut in 1991. On the “This Is an EP Release” EP’s “Same Song,” he is featured.

Chopmaster J captioned an old photo of Shock G with, “34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea: We can be a hip hop band and take on the world.” “Through it all, the dream became a reality, and for some, the reality became a nightmare. And now he’s awakened from his celebrity. Shock G, aka Humpty Hump, will live forever. And my brotha, Greg Jacobs, rest in peace!!!!”

Shock G and Chopmaster J formed the group with Kenny K in the late 1980s and broke through in 1989 with “The Humpty Dance,” the video for which featured Shock G in his Humpty guise. In 1990, they released their debut album, “Sex Packets,” which included the hit “Doowutchyalike.” They also released an EP. However, the follow-up, “Sons of the P,” was less successful, and while the group continued into the 2000s, its time had passed. The group’s most recent release, a live album, came out in 2008. Shock G, on the other hand, was a very active producer who collaborated with Dr. Dre, Bobby Brown, 2Pac, and others.
