Days after seven Republican senators joined all 50 Democrats in voting to convict him of inciting the deadly January 6 Capitol riot, former US President Donald Trump assaulted Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

He will never do what has to be done or what is right for our nation. If necessary and appropriate, I’m going to back up the primary rivals who support Making America Great Again and our America First policy. We want leadership that is brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate,” said Trump.

On Saturday, McConnell voted to acquit Trump but strongly criticised the former president for instigating the Capitol riot.

There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. The top Senate Republican said in a speech on the Senate floor shortly after the vote that the people who stormed this building believed that they were acting on their President’s wishes and instructions.

“Former President Trump’s actions that preceded the riot were a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty,” McConnell said, noting that Trump was “still liable for everything he did.”

Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, filed a lawsuit earlier on Tuesday accusing Trump of inciting the US Capitol insurrection and conspiring with his private lawyer Rudy Giuliani and extremist groups including the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers to try to prevent Congress from certifying the presidential election victory of Joe Biden.
