The LEGO Foundation, Germany, and the US each contributed $42 million to the UN global fund for education in catastrophes and protracted crises known as Education Cannot Wait (ECW). The LEGO Foundation offered $25 million, Germany offered 10 million euros ($9.7 million), and the US offered $7 million when the donors announced their choice during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week. According to the ECW, the new financing will help to mobilise much needed assistance to confront the global learning crisis, which has resulted in over 78 million girls and boys dropping out of school and nearly two-thirds of 10-year-olds being unable to read a simple paragraph.

“The investment we make in people and their potential is via education. Only a small portion of it have we so far seen. There are currently 222 million kids who can help us realise humanity’s full potential “Yasmine Sherif, the ECW director, remarked.

The Director said, “We must work together to fully fund Education Cannot Wait and our strategic partners in mobilising $1.5 billion over the next four years.” According to the fund, the ECW and its strategic partners have raised more than $1.1 billion since the initiative’s founding in 2016 and have directly assisted close to 7 million children and teenagers.
