The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show on Sunday not only included some of the hip-finest hop musicians, but it also featured Eminem taking a knee.
The rapper kneeled after performing his 2002 song “Lose Yourself.” When former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick utilized the kneeling motion to protest police brutality and racial prejudice, it sparked outrage.
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was harshly chastised for initiating this type of protest during the national anthem during a preseason game in 2016.
Since then, athletes of all levels have knelt during the national anthem in support of Kaepernick and his message.
Eminem has already expressed his support for Kaepernick’s efforts. During the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards, he delivered an impassioned 4.5-minute freestyle rap, criticizing former President Donald Trump and backing Kaepernick and his message against racism and police brutality.
“F— that, this is for Colin, ball up a fist and keep that s— balled like Donald the b—-,” the Detroit rapper rapped.
Kaepernick was also mentioned in the lyrics of Eminem’s 2017 song “Untouchable,” in which he sang, “Someone needs to be the sacrificial lamb… So it’s dubbed a Kaepernick tantrum…
If you don’t stand for the national anthem… we’ll raise it, you’ll have to applaud it.”
The halftime concert on Sunday was the first time hip-hop musicians were the major performers. Rappers Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, and R&B singer Mary J. Blige performed alongside Eminem.
The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl on Sunday, 23-20.
