After Russia invaded Ukraine, Russian-born NHL player Alex Ovechkin expressed hope for an end to the fighting.
“I would say it’s a difficult situation,” the Washington Capitals left wing said at a news conference on Friday. “I have a large number of friends in Russia and Ukraine. And it’s difficult to imagine another war. I hope it will soon be over and there will be peace throughout the world.”
As Russian-American relations have deteriorated in recent years, Ovechkin has been careful to show his support for both countries, but when asked about his friendship with and previous support for Russian President Vladimir Putin at a Friday news conference, he remained neutral.
“He is, after all, my president. But, as I previously stated, I am not involved in politics. I’m a sportsperson “Ochevkin responded. “As I previously stated, I am hopeful that everything will be completed soon. It’s a difficult situation for both parties right now. Everything, as I previously stated, I hope will come to an end, and I am not in control of the situation.”
Ovechkin is one of many Russian ice hockey players who play for American teams at all levels, from junior to professional.
The 36-year-old former first-round draught pick has over 1,300 points in his 17-year professional career with the Capitals, making him the fourth Russian-born player in the league to do so.
He emphasized his desire for the conflict to end and that people on both sides would be safe.
“No more war, please,” he pleaded. “It makes no difference who is fighting. Russia and Ukraine Various countries. I believe we live in a world where we must live in peace and greatness.”
