In a tragic turn of events, Eastern Ukraine witnessed the loss of at least 49 innocent lives on Thursday due to a Russian Attack with rockets on a village store. This horrifying incident ranks among the deadliest attacks in recent months and unfolded while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was attending a crucial summit in Spain, seeking support from European allies.

Zelenskyy spared no words in denouncing the Russian Attack on the store and café in the village of Hroza, branding it a “demonstrably brutal Russian crime” and a “completely deliberate act of terrorism.” He urgently called upon Western allies to fortify Ukraine’s air defenses, stressing the imperative of halting “Russian terror.”

The Ukrainian President expressed that Russia employs such acts of terror to normalize its genocidal aggression on a global scale. At the summit, discussions with European leaders revolved around strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, reinforcing its military capabilities, and securing the nation against the looming threat of terrorism.

Among the casualties, a 6-year-old boy tragically lost his life, highlighting the indiscriminate and devastating nature of the assault. Six other individuals were wounded, their lives forever scarred by this senseless act of violence.

The timing of this horrific Russian Attack couldn’t have been more poignant. Zelenskyy found himself in Granada, southern Spain, attending a summit convened by the European Political Community—a body formed in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

As winter approaches, Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses. He expressed optimism about the groundwork laid for new agreements with international partners, aimed at safeguarding Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, particularly its power facilities, from potential threats that could exacerbate the challenges of the cold season.

The Granada summit wasn’t limited to addressing immediate concerns; it also spotlighted broader issues. Zelenskyy revealed that discussions encompassed collaborative efforts aimed at ensuring global food security and protecting freedom of navigation in the Black Sea. This strategic waterway has seen tensions escalate following the Russian military’s targeting of Ukrainian ports, a consequence of Moscow’s withdrawal from a U.N.-sponsored grain agreement designed to ensure safe grain exports from Ukraine’s ports.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office, keenly vigilant, cited intelligence suggesting that Russia may be plotting to lay sea mines in the approaches to Ukrainian ports, with the ominous intention of targeting civilian shipping and laying the blame on Ukraine. The UK pledged its cooperation with Ukraine to enhance maritime safety in the region.

Speaking in Granada, Zelenskyy underlined the need to preserve European unity in the face of Russian disinformation and to remain resolute in the midst of what he described as a “political storm” in the United States.

When questioned about concerns that support for Ukraine might waver in the U.S. Congress, President Zelenskyy expressed confidence in the unwavering support of both the Biden administration and Congress. His recent visit to Washington bolstered his belief in this steadfast backing.

In light of the continued threats posed by Russia, Zelenskyy called for an array of measures to protect Europe from potential aggression by Moscow. These included additional air defense systems for Ukraine, increased artillery and shell supplies, long-range missiles, and drones for Ukrainian soldiers. Additionally, he advocated for new formats of support and security guarantees for nations facing threats from Russia.

Earlier on the same Thursday, Russia escalated tensions by targeting Ukraine’s southern regions with drones. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 24 out of 29 Iranian-made drones launched by Russia at the Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad regions.

In response to the ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine mounted counterattacks, employing drones to target Russian infrastructure facilities across the border. This tit-for-tat escalation led to power cuts in affected areas.
