André Leon Talley, a fashion legend and former Vogue editor, died at the age of 73, according to a statement posted on his official Instagram late Tuesday.

“It is with profound regret that we announce André Leon Talley’s passing on January 18, 2022, in New York,” the message said. “Mr. Talley was Vogue’s larger-than-life creative director throughout the magazine’s climb to prominence as the world’s fashion bible.”

His cause of death was not revealed.
“He was a close confidant of Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, and Paloma Picasso during the previous five decades as an international icon, and he had a knack for identifying, supporting, and promoting emerging designers. His work has been published in Vanity Fair, HG, Interview, Ebony, and Women’s Wear Daily, and he was the editor of Numero Russia “The statement went on. “Mr. Talley authored Valentino, A.L.T.: A Memoir, A.L.T. 365+, and Little Black Dress for Assouline, as well as contributing to Valentino: At the Emperor’s Table and Cartier Panthère. He was included in the documentary The Gospel. André’s newest book, The Chiffon Trenches, became a New York Times Best Seller.”

Talley was an American fashion writer who helped shape American Vogue and fashion in general. From 1983 to 1987, he was the magazine’s fashion news director, and from 1988 to 1995, he was its creative director. Later, he was promoted to editor-at-large, a post he maintained until 2013.

Talley, who eventually became the editor-in-chief of Numéro Russia magazine, remained an infrequent contributor to Vogue after his retirement as editor and published an article in 2019 remembering his late friend, designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in February of that year.

Marc Jacobs shared an old photo of himself with Talley on Instagram with the message, “I’m taken aback. You supported me and have been my friend since the beginning. Our conversations, the times we shared….oh, my friend. You and your interests were bigger than life. Andre, I adore you and will miss you. Rest in peace, sir.”
