In Brooklyn, in his bulletproof vest, a New York City police officer responding to a domestic violence call was shot on Christmas Eve, officials said.

At a news conference at Kings County Hospital, where the officer was receiving treatment, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea and Mayor Bill de Blasio denounced the shooting early Friday. Shea said that the 27-year-old police veteran, two and a half years old, was “in extremely good spirits” and was expected to leave the hospital soon.

The shooting took place in the Crown Heights neighbourhood on Thursday night and the officer was shot in the back, but the bullet did not penetrate into the skin, Shea said. Seven shots were fired at the perpetrator, the police commissioner said, but he was not shot or injured and ultimately surrendered after briefly running from officers.
