In 2019, the US blocked USD 63 million u.s. dollars from designated terrorist groups, including Pakistan-based LeT and JeM, as part of its cracking down on international terrorist organisations, according to the Treasury Department.
The US blocked the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) USD 342,000, the Jaish-e Mohammed (JeM) USD 1,725, and the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen-al-Islami funds USD 45,798, the US Treasury Department said in its annual report on Thursday.
All three are Pakistan-based terror outfits. Harkat-ul-Mujahideen-al-Islami is a jihad group operating mainly in Kashmir.
The report said that another Pakistan-based Kashmir-centric terrorist organisation, Hizbul Mujahideen, had USD 4,321 blocked by the US in 2019 as compared to USD 2,287 the previous year.
In the case of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, the US blocked USD 5.067 in 2019 against USD 318 in 2018.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Department of Treasury is the leading U.S government agency responsible for enforcing sanctions on the assets of international terrorist organisations and terrorism-supporting countries.
As part of its overall mission of administering and enforcing U.S.-based economic and trade sanctions foreign policy and national security objectives, the federal body implements these sanctions.
The US blocked USD 63 million in funds from nearly 70 designated terrorist organisations in 2019, according to the report, with the highest being USD 3.9 million from the al-Qaeda group. While the total amount of blocked funds was USD 46 million in 2018, al-total Qaeda’s was USD 6.4 million that year.
The list is comprised of the Haqqani network (USD 26,546). It is a significant increase in 2018 from USD 3,626.
The US is still blocking USD 580,811 in funding from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) based in Sri Lanka, which has remained the same for two years, 2018 and 2019.
The report showed that Taliban funds were blocked by the US from USD 296,805 in 2018 to USD 59,065 in 2019, a significant drop.
According to the report, a wide-ranging assault on international terrorism and its supporters and financiers is the combination of sanctions programmes targeting international terrorists and terrorist organisations with those targeting terrorism-supporting governments.
Moreover, the US has blocked USD 200.19 million in financing from Iran, Sudan, Syria, and North Korea, countries designated as terrorist sponsors.
