New York : Nineteen people were murdered in an apartment fire in New York City, including nine children, in one of the city’s worst fires in recent memory, according to the city’s fire commissioner. On Sunday, Stefan Ringel, a senior assistant to Mayor Eric Adams, as well as a local official who could not speak publicly about the number of children slain, confirmed the death toll.
According to Ringel, more than a half-dozen people were injured, with 13 of them in critical condition at the hospital. According to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro, who appeared at a press conference earlier that day, the majority of the victims suffered from severe smoke inhalation. According to the FDNY, around 200 firefighters responded to the incident at the Bronx’s Twin Park apartments, a 19-story structure on East 181st Street.

The ferocity of the fire was compared by Nigro to the Happy Land social club disaster in 1990, which killed 87 people when a man set fire to the building following a dispute with his previous lover and was booted out of the club.
The fire started on the second and third floors of a duplex flat, according to Nigro. According to him, firefighters discovered the apartment door open, which allowed the fire to move fast upward and exacerbate the flames. Although the source of the fire remains unknown, it is suspected to be suspicious. The incident occurred just days after a house fire in Philadelphia killed 12 people, eight of whom were children.
