According to the Financial Times, Facebook’s parent company Meta is looking into the potential of digital money known internally as “Zuck Bucks,” a play on the founder’s name.

In the face of significant reaction from financial regulators throughout the world, Meta abandoned its ambition to develop a worldwide cryptocurrency, first dubbed Libra but later renamed Diem.

However, Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s creator and CEO, has spoken about the importance of e-commerce and financial tools in his vision for the metaverse, an immersive online environment.

In response to an AFP query, a Meta representative said, “We consistently evaluate new product developments for individuals, businesses, and artists.”

“As a company, we’re focusing on creating for the metaverse, which includes payments and financial services.”

The representative declined to comment on particular developments under consideration.

According to the Financial Times, Meta is considering digital currencies similar to those used in video games, with its version being dubbed “Zuck Bucks” by those working on it.

Tokens are used for transactions in games like “Fortnite” and “Roblox.”

The tokens might be used to compensate producers and influencers whose content attracts large audiences online.

Meta is attempting to diversify its revenue streams away from targeted advertising, which has raised privacy concerns.
