The announcement by India’s and Pakistan’s militaries to strictly adhere to all ceasefire agreements along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and other sectors, according to a top US lawmaker, is the first step toward de-escalation.
The move, according to the White House, is a positive step toward greater South Asian peace and stability.
“I applaud India’s and Pakistan’s announcements to resume a ceasefire along their shared border,” said Congressman Gregory Meeks, chairman of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“It’s a first step,” he said, “that I hope will lead to further de-escalation of tensions.”
With effect from February 25, India and Pakistan said in a joint statement that they will strictly adhere to all ceasefire agreements along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and other sectors.
The Hindu American Foundation also welcomed the statement and called on Pakistan to comply with its international commitments, to put an end to the financing and sponsorship of terrorist organizations, and to the cross-border terrorist attacks carried out in India.
