Julian Sands, a British-born film actor best known for his roles in films such as “A Room with a View” and “Warlock,” has gone missing in the Southern California mountains, according to media outlets citing local authorities.

According to Los Angeles television station KABC-TV and the Hollywood trade publication Variety, the 65-year-old performer was reported missing by his wife on Friday evening, January 13, after he went hiking in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains.

“From what I understand, he went on a hike that day and when he didn’t return, his family reported him missing,” Gloria Huerta, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, told KABC-TV.

Ground teams immediately began searching for the actor, but the search was called off about 24 hours later due to avalanche risks and poor trail conditions, according to Variety, which also cited the sheriff’s department.

Intermittent aerial searches by helicopter and drone aircraft have continued, and authorities plan to resume a ground search once conditions allow, according to Variety.

The Baldy Bowl, located about 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles and just below the Mount Baldy ski area, is a popular destination for skiers, climbers, and hikers.

However, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department issued an advisory on Thursday warning that the area is dangerous for outdoor recreation due to weeks of storms that dumped torrential rain and heavy snow across California.

The sheriff’s search teams have been dispatched on 14 rescue missions on Mount Baldy and surrounding areas over the last four weeks for lost or stranded hikers, two of whom died after falling or injuring themselves, according to the advisory.

The sheriff’s department, which made no mention of the actor in its advisory, did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for more information. Sands’ representative in Los Angeles could not be reached for comment immediately.

Sands, who was born in England, relocated to California in the 1980s to pursue a Hollywood career following the success of the 1985 film “A Room with a View,” a period romance in which he played the lead opposite Helena Bonham Carter.

In the 1989 supernatural thriller “Warlock” and its sequel “Warlock: The Armageddon,” he played Satan’s son. Other film credits include supporting roles in “Arachnophobia,” “The Killing Fields,” and “Leaving Las Vegas.”
