Early Monday, a moderate earthquake struck Croatia near its capital Zagreb, causing panic and some damage to buildings south of the city. There were no immediate reports of injuries reported.

Seismologists in Croatia said the magnitude of the earthquake that struck around 7:30 a.m. (0630 GMT) was 5.0, with the epicentre 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the capital near the towns of Petrinja and Sisak. After the initial one, several smaller tremors were felt.

Darinko Dumbovic, mayor of Petrinja, told state HRT television that “we have bricks and tiles in the streets and fallen chimneys.” He said the president and prime minister of Croatia will visit the city later Monday.

The quake has also been felt in neighbouring Bosnia.

The area was hit by a severe quake on 22 March, causing considerable damage to Zagreb. One person died, and then at least 27 were injured.

Monday’s quake seemed to be much lighter.
