Joe Biden took a shot at Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, saying comedian Trevor Noah would not be incarcerated for mocking the President of the United States. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to turn this over to Trevor now, strap myself towards my seat,” Mr Biden said in his emergence of Mr. Noah at the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner, adding, “And, Trevor, some really good news is: Now you get to roast the President of the United States and, except in Moscow, you won’t go to jail.”
It’s worth noting that Mr. Biden was referring to Alexei Navalny, the imprisoned Russian opposition leader who is one of Mr.Putin’s most vocal critics. It is believed that the Kremlin attempted to poison the outspoken Russian opponents figure with the Novichok nerve agent in 2020. Mr Navalny became ill on a flight from Siberia to Moscow at the time after being poisoned.

He was then moved to Germany for emergency medical treatment. As he recovered, he stated that he planned to return to his home country. Mr Navalny, however, was arrested and detained upon his return to Russia. He was found guilty of theft or fraud and sentenced to nine years in a maximum-security prison. However, he continues to speak out against Mr. Putin via social media.

Despite reports of Novichok by both German researchers and the inter-governmental Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Moscow has denied any involvement in the opposition leader’s poisoning (OPCW).Indeed, according to DW, the Russian envoy to the OCPW has accused Germany and its allied forces of launching a “mass campaign of misinformation against Russia.”
Furthermore, the Kremlin deflected condemnations from over 50 countries, including the US, by claiming that Mr Navalny was poisoned with a Soviet-developed nerve agent after having arrived in Germany.
