Potential opponents are getting ready to take on a divided Republican leader who is still reeling from his party’s midterm election defeats in light of the former U.S. President Donald Trump’s intention to run for the White House again in 2024.

The following is a list of potential rivals for the Republican nomination:

ELECTED OFFICER DONALD TRUMP

Trump, 76, is reportedly still the overwhelming favorite to win the Republican nomination in 2024, according to strategists and party officials.

However, the former president had a dubious track record with the candidates he backed in the midterm elections, and some attribute this to the fact that the Republicans were unable to take over both chambers of Congress.

Trump’s decision to run for president comes as legal disputes surrounding his alleged participation in the Capitol Hill attack on January 6, 2021, as well as his economic transactions, continue to rage.

RON DESANTIS, GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA

Florida’s 44-year-old Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, maybe Trump’s strongest opponent for the nomination.

In his campaign for a second four-year term as governor, DeSantis sailed to a resounding win last week thanks to a solid political base and war fund.

Conservatives around the country have praised his defiance of COVID-19 limits as well as disagreements with liberals over LGBTQ rights, immigration, and race-based discussions.

MIKE PENCE, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT

Former Republican vice president Mike Pence acted as the flamboyant Trump’s obedient, prim No. 2, but when Trump supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol, his boss turned against him. On that day, Pence, a Republican and former congressman, disobeyed Trump and legally recognised Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

Since then, Pence has straddled a precarious line to avoid angering Trump’s supporters.

It is commonly believed that the 63-year-old former governor of Indiana is considering a bid for president. He ran a campaign for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a Trump foe who won reelection in the midterm elections.

Governor of Texas Greg Abbott

In the midterm elections, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott defeated Democratic former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke with Trump’s support in his bid for a third four-year term.

During his second tenure, 65-year-old Abbott has adopted increasingly conservative policies and opposed COVID-19 vaccine and mask mandates. He is erecting a new barrier on the border with Mexico and enacted into law the most stringent abortion restriction of any state in the United States.

Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, Abbott has not officially addressed his alleged intention to run for president in 2024.
