Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, today supported India’s bid to join the UN Security Council permanently. Mr. Lavrov stated during his speech to the 77th United Nations General Assembly, “Through the representation of nations from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, we see the potential for the Security Council to become more democratic. Particularly important global players like India and Brazil ought to be considered for permanent participation in the council.”

In his speech to the assembly, Lavrov accused the West of “having a tantrum” over the referendum being held in the parts of Ukraine under Russian control on joining their federation.

Using what he called “illegal unilateral sanctions” that violate the UN Charter and harm the poor citizens of poorer countries by focusing on their imports of food, medicine, and vaccines, he claimed that the United States was trying to turn the entire world into its “backyard” and was punishing those who disagreed with its worldview along with its allies.
