Pakistani bowling coach Waqar Younis will leave New Zealand to spend time with his family in Lahore after the first cricket test ends at Mount Maunganui on Dec. 30.

Younis has not seen his family since June due to a pandemic and associated quarantine. His family will be in Lahore before they leave for Australia on Jan. 17.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board said that Younis had asked the team management to be granted leave so that he could spend extra time with his immediate family.

Younis will join the Pakistan team in time for the South Africa series, which starts on Jan. 26, when the first test is hosted by Karachi.

Team director Mansoor Rana said that since Pakistan’s next home series against South Africa will not end until Feb. 14, management took a pragmatic view of Younis’ request.

If, after the second test, he (Younis) had returned with his side to Lahore, he would have had only one week to spend with them, Rana said.

Families always come first for all of us and we have made similar exemptions in the past so that our team members are able to achieve the right work-life balance.
