Foreign Secretary Liz Truss of the United Kingdom has stated that the Russia-Ukraine conflict could last up to ten years. She warned the West, speaking at a foreign policy event dinner on Wednesday, that if Russian President Vladimir Putin succeeds, “there will be untold further misery across Europe and disastrous effects across the globe.” Ms Truss suggested that the conflict in Ukraine could last a long time and that Europe “must be prepared for the long haul.”
Government officials in the United Kingdom are concerned that if Putin is allowed to keep Ukrainian territory, he will launch attacks on Georgia and Moldova. In her speech, Liz Truss described Putin as a “desperate rogue operator” whose aggressive behavior should be met with resistance. She went on to say that the United Kingdom and its allies should “go further and faster to push Russia out of Ukraine as a whole.”

Lizz Truss was speaking at an event in Ukraine shortly after several civilian funerals, including one for a three-month-old girl. Ms Truss argued that the Ukraine crisis should be used as a catalyst to fundamentally change the way the West views and approaches international security. For the United Kingdom, this entails forming strategic alliances around the world and using economic power to deter aggressors, she said, adding that the G7 countries, which account for more than half of global net wealth, must act as a “economic NATO” and defend collective prosperity.

The EU has imposed a slew of sanctions against Russia, but it remains reliant on Russia for energy.
