During their phone call last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping requested that US counterpart Joe Biden forbid US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from travelling to Taiwan, according to The Washington Post’s Saturday citation of White House officials.

However, Xi’s worries were dismissed, and he was warned against Beijing’s “provocative” moves if the visit were to happen, the article said.

According to the publication, the US President informed his Chinese colleague that Pelosi would decide on her own visits abroad and that he “could not oblige” because the US Congress is an independent branch of the government.

Additionally, Biden advised his Chinese counterpart against using “provocative and coercive” tactics in the event that the US House speaker’s visit occurred.

Pelosi visited Taiwan at the beginning of August. Since 1997, no US House speaker had previously visited the island.

Pelosi visited Taiwan for the first time in 25 years as the highest-ranking US official. China denounced Pelosi’s visit, viewing it as a sign of support for secession, and began extensive military drills near the island.

Beijing rejects any official interactions between Taiwan and other nations because it views the island as an integral component of its sovereign territory.

According to Beijing, the political basis for China-US relations is the One China concept, and any deviation from these commitments would jeopardise bilateral cooperation.

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns stated that China needs to persuade the rest of the world that it is not a “agent of instability” and will operate peacefully in the Taiwan Strait in his first TV appearance since starting his job in Beijing six months ago.

Along with China’s aggressive military exercises near Taiwan, he also discussed Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan in an interview with CNN.

“The visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to Taiwan, which was peaceful, should not have caused a crisis in US-China ties, in our opinion. The Beijing administration created this situation. An excessive response was made “Burns reported to CNN on Friday while in the US Embassy.

The envoy stated that it is now “up to the Beijing government to persuade the rest of the world that it will act peacefully in the future.”

“I think there is a lot of concern across the world that China has now become a source of instability in the Taiwan Strait, and that is not in anyone’s interest,”
