Next week, when Kyiv celebrates the 31st anniversary of the war-torn nation’s independence, Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, warned that Russia might take the provocative action of bringing Ukrainian soldiers to justice.

According to media reports quoted by Zelensky, Russia was getting ready to hold a public trial on Wednesday in conjunction with the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence for fighters kidnapped during the siege of Mariupol.

The former Soviet republic was invaded by Russia six months ago on August 24, starting a bloody war that has claimed thousands of lives. Ukraine’s Independence Day falls on that day.

In a speech that evening, Zelensky forewarned that there would be abuse if this horrible court was held and if our people were pushed into these circumstances against all accords and international law.

Beyond this point, no negotiations will be permitted.

The city of Kyiv has already declared that public meetings are prohibited. Kharkiv also announced a curfew for the holiday.

Zelensky was going back to a point he had made the previous evening in his remarks.

Late on Saturday, he cautioned that “Russia could attempt to do something extremely revolting, particularly terrible.”

Demoralizing us and “sowing pessimism, fear, and strife” are two of the enemy’s top priorities, according to these statements.

However, he continued, “We must be strong enough to reject all provocation” and “make the occupiers pay for their terror.”

Russian officials could step up their bombing campaign, according to presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak.

He was quoted as saying by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency that “Russia is an antiquated state that relates its acts to particular dates, it’s sort of an obsession.”

Emergency services said on Sunday that a lady was killed and two other civilians were injured in overnight raids in Kharkiv, which has been regularly bombed by Russia for weeks.

According to the pro-Kyiv governor of the area, Pavlo Kyrylenko, four people were reportedly killed by Russian fire in Donetsk.

According to a spokeswoman for the local government, five cruise missiles were launched from the Black Sea toward Odessa. Three struck a silo without injuring anyone while two were shot down by air defences.
