Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister of Turkey, stated on Sunday that Ankara is making a serious effort to extend a U.N.-backed plan that has allowed Ukraine to export grain from ports that Russia had blocked after its invasion.

Grain exports from three Ukrainian ports were made possible by the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was mediated by the United Nations and Turkey in July of last year. If there is no extension reached, the agreement, which was extended in November, will terminate on March 18.

“We are working hard for the smooth implementation and further extension of the Black Sea grain agreement,” Cavusoglu said in an address at the United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries being held in Doha, Qatar.

Cavusoglu added that he spoke with Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations, about the extension attempts.

Russia stated on Wednesday that it would only consent to extending the Black Sea grain agreement if the interests of its own agricultural farmers are taken into consideration.
