On Saturday, the U.S. Senate acquitted former President Donald J Trump on charges of inciting an uprising at the Capitol on January 6. The 100-member senate voted to impeach Trump by 57-43 votes after four days of the impeachment trial, 10 votes short of the two-thirds needed for conviction.

Trump was charged with inciting insurrection over his supporters’ deadly January 6 assault on the US Capitol.

Although seven Republican Senators voted to impeach Trump, the Democrats, who have 50 members in the Senate, have failed to obtain the two-thirds or 67 votes necessary to impeach the former president.

Trump is the first president ever to be impeached twice, and after leaving office, the first president to face impeachment.

Seven Republican Senators voted in favour of impeaching him, including Bill Cassidy, Richard Burr, Mitt Romney, and Susan Collins.

Soon after the acquittal, Trump released a statement saying that “no president has ever gone through anything like it”

“It’s a sad comment about the times when one political party in America has been given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, Excuse rioters, and turn justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and opinions with whom or against whom they disagree,” he said.

In spite of the party losing control of both the White House and Congress during his tumultuous tenure, the Washington Post said the outcome underscored Trump’s continued grip on most Republicans.

“First of all, I want to thank my team of dedicated lawyers and others for their tireless work in upholding justice and defending the truth. My deepest thanks also go to all the U.S. Senators and Congressmen who stood proudly for the Constitution that we all revere and for the sacred legal principles at the heart of our country,” said Trump in his statement.
