During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday in the Kremlin, Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu praised the relationship between Beijing and Moscow.

Our relationships are really solid. They are greater than the military-political pacts of the Cold War era… He stated in statements that were translated and aired on Russian television that they were “very stable.”

According to him, relations between China and Russia have “already entered a new era.”

Since becoming the new defence minister of China, this is my first trip abroad. I selected Russia specifically for this to highlight the uniqueness and strategic significance of our bilateral relations, Li remarked.

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s minister of defence, also attended the meeting, and Putin commended the two countries’ military cooperation.

We also actively collaborate through the military departments, regularly exchange helpful information, work together on military-technical projects, and hold joint training exercises, according to Putin.

Following China’s president Xi Jinping’s formal visit to Moscow last month, Li will be in Russia till April 19.

During their two days of discussions, Putin and Xi declared a “new era” in their relationship and talked about Beijing’s ideas for resolving the Ukraine issue.

In an effort to balance out US global supremacy, Moscow and Beijing have increased their cooperation during the past few years. Since Putin began an offensive in Ukraine last February, their relationship has only intensified.

Washington has accused Beijing of considering arms transfers to Moscow despite Beijing’s efforts to represent itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine war; China has refuted these accusations.
