The appointment of four notable Indian-American MPs to three important House panels—Pramila Jayapal, Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Ro Khanna—reflects the community’s expanding influence in US politics.

The first immigrant to hold a leadership position for the subcommittee, Congresswoman Jayapal has been named Ranking Member of the influential House Judiciary Committee’s panel on Immigration.

According to a press release, Jayapal, 57, who represents Washington’s 7th Congressional District takes Zoe Lofgren’s place on the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement.

I am honored and humbled to serve as the Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement because I am the first South Asian woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives and one of just twenty members of Congress who is a naturalized citizen.

“Alone and with nothing in my pockets, I arrived in this nation at the age of 16. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to live the American Dream after spending 17 years on an alphabet soup of visas to become a US citizen; unfortunately, the American Dream is no longer attainable for far too many immigrants today, she said.

A prominent US House committee that deals with issues relating to intelligence has selected Bera, 57, as a member.

Bera, a six-term member of Congress, is the representative for California’s sixth Congressional District.

As chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation during the 117th Congress, Bera led congressional initiatives to deepen ties with Indo-Pacific allies and partners in order to achieve US economic and security objectives.

Krishnamoorthi has been appointed as the ranking member of a recently established House committee on China, which will examine many facets of Chinese behavior and the threat it poses to the US and the rest of the globe.

Krishnamoorthi has been named the ranking member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, according to a statement made on Wednesday by US House of Representatives Minority Leader Jeffries (CCP).

The Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy established this new committee in the 118th Congress with the express intent of looking into and formulating legislation to address the United States’ economic, technological, and security competition with the Chinese Communist Party. Another Indian-American Congressman, Ro Khanna, has also been appointed to the committee.

While Khanna, 46, is the four-term politician representing California’s 17th Congressional district, Krishnamoorthi, 49, is the four-term congressman representing Illinois’ eight congressional districts.

The Chinese Communist Party poses serious security and economic threats to the United States as well as to democracy and prosperity around the world, as evidenced by its threats against Taiwan’s democracy, weaponization of TikTok, and theft of American intellectual property valued at hundreds of billions of dollars, he said.

He stressed the significance of upholding American citizens’ interests.
