On Wednesday, a video of US President Joe Biden appearing to declare during a speech that he has cancer sparked outrage on social media. Mr. Biden was speaking during a visit to a former coal mine factory in Somerset, Massachusetts, to promote new executive measures to combat climate change. Though the comment looked casual, the White House swiftly clarified that the President was referring to skin cancer treatment he had received before to taking office in January of last year.

Mr. Biden was outlining the harm caused by oil refinery pollutants when he made a reference to his childhood home in Delaware, saying, “My mother drove us instead of us walking, and guess what? What was going on with the first frost? To get the oil slick off the window, you had to use your windshield wipers. That’s why I – and so many other people I grew up with – have cancer, and why Delaware had the highest cancer rate in the country for a long time.”

When the video went viral on Twitter, many users were curious whether the comment was a mistake or an admission.

“Joe Biden just announced he has cancer and called a male House member “her,” a user noted. “Does Joe Biden have cancer or dementia?” asked another.

“I hope your cancer heals,” another user tweeted.

As the President’s words sparked debate, the White House emphasised that he was referring to his previous diagnosis. The New York Post and Sky News contacted the White House, and its spokesperson Andrew Bates linked to a tweet from Washington Post columnist Glenn Kessler, who stated that Mr Biden had “non-melanoma skin tumours” removed before taking office.
