North Korea has criticised the recent agreement between the United States, South Korea, and Japan to expand military cooperation as a means of realising a US aim for a regional military alliance similar to NATO.

North Korea’s foreign ministry spokesperson said as much in response to a question from KCNA, the state news agency reported on Sunday.

“The fact plainly demonstrates that the main objective of the US disseminating the rumour about the ‘danger from North Korea’ is to give an excuse for achieving military domination over the Asia-Pacific area,” stated the spokesperson.

“The current situation needs bolstering the country’s defences in order to effectively deal with the rapidly deteriorating security environment,” the official stated.

On the sidelines of a NATO meeting last week, the presidents of the United States, South Korea, and Japan agreed to look into new measures to bolster “extended deterrence” against North Korea.
