Canada has declared a restriction on entrance for Russian President Vladimir Putin and around 1,000 Russian nationals due to the war in Ukraine, said Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino on Tuesday.

“In the face of the Putin regime’s heinous actions,” Mendicino said, “Canada stands with Ukraine, and we will hold Russia accountable for its crimes.”

“That’s why we just announced a ban on about 1,000 Russians entering Canada, including Putin and his associates,” he said.

Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid an unexpected visit to Ukraine in the midst of Russia’s attack on the country.

Suspilne, a Ukrainian media outlet, and Irpin Mayor Olexander Markushyn announced Trudeau’s visit to Irpin, which had been harmed by Russia’s initial effort to take Kyiv.

Markushyn shared photos of Trudeau on social media, stating the Canadian leader was taken aback by the destruction he witnessed at civilian dwellings.

Trudeau is the latest Western politician to visit Ukraine to express solidarity with the country.

His office later confirmed the visit, stating that “the prime minister is in Ukraine to meet with President Zelenskyy and to underline Canada’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.”
