India has reminded the UN Security Council that the escalation of tensions along the Russia-Ukraine border is a cause for concern, and that the developments have the potential to jeopardise regional peace and security, appealing for restraint on all sides.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador TS Tirumurti, said Monday night at an emergency UNSC meeting on the situation in Ukraine, “We have been closely following the evolving developments relating to Ukraine, including developments along Ukraine’s eastern border and the related announcement by the Russian Federation.”

The escalation of tensions near Ukraine’s border with Russia is deeply concerning. These trends could jeopardise the region’s peace and security, according to Tirumurti.

India has asked for restraint from both sides. “The immediate goal is to de-escalate tensions while also taking into account all countries’ legitimate security interests and working for long-term peace and stability in the area and beyond,” Tirumurti said.

He highlighted how important it is for all parties to maintain world peace and security by showing maximum caution and stepping up diplomatic efforts to find a mutually agreeable settlement as soon as possible.

“We must give credit where credit is due to recent efforts by parties to reduce tensions. In this context, we applaud the concerted efforts currently underway, notably those led by the Trilateral Contact Group and the Normandy format. Parties must work harder to reconcile opposing viewpoints. A military escalation is unaffordable for us “He said himself.

More than 20,000 Indian students and nationalities live and study in Ukraine, according to Tirumurti, primarily in the country’s border regions. “Our main objective is the well-being of Indians,” he stated.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin signed two decrees recognising the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) and the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) as independent and sovereign entities, the Russia-Ukraine situation reached a boiling point. Putin also signed the Treaties of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance between Russia and the LPR and the DPR with the heads of the two’republics’ in a ceremony held in the Kremlin on Monday.

“I believe it is imperative to make a long overdue choice — to recognise the DPR and LPR’s independence and sovereignty immediately,” Putin said in a televised speech to the country.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a powerful military alliance of 30 countries, expanded eastward, resulting in a security crisis in Europe. Putin stated that NATO’s acceptance of Ukraine as a member state and subsequent construction of facilities on its territory is only a “matter of time,” adding that the level of military threats to Russia will skyrocket.

He said that Moscow had demanded security guarantees from the US and NATO, but that the Western countries had ignored Russia’s main concerns and that their stance had not changed. “In such a case, Russia has every right to retaliate to ensure its own security,” the President stated.
