North Korea claims to have disarmed US-made Korean War bombs at an apartment building

More than 110 bombs, shells, mines, grenades, and other explosives that the North Korean government claims are US-made Korean War weaponry have been found by construction workers at a Pyongyang apartment building, according to state media on Friday. According to state news outlet KCNA, experts with Pyongyang City Public Security Bureau discovered and destroyed the devices.

The explosives, which were discovered at the housing construction site in the Hwasong area, were rusty but could detonate at any moment, according to the report.

In an effort to improve living conditions in the impoverished country, leader Kim Jong Un has begun construction projects to create 50,000 new apartments in Pyongyang.

Natural disasters, self-imposed border closures to stop COVID-19, and international sanctions for its ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs, which the United States claims divert scarce resources from meeting basic human requirements, have all had a negative impact on the country’s economy.

Residents of both Koreas have long been at risk from explosives left over from the 1950–1953 Korean War. North Korean teams have received bomb disposal training in the past from professionals with the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Weapon Contamination Unit.

US researchers claim that during the Korean War, US aircraft bombed large portions of North Korea more frequently than they did throughout the entirety of the Pacific theater of World War II.

The North Korean government’s education program and propaganda have made extensive use of that bombing campaign and other assaults.

The army and civilian construction workers felt a surge of hatred for US imperialists after witnessing the destruction of explosives, according to a story from KCNA on Friday.
