As early as next week, President Joe Biden could officially launch his long-anticipated campaign for a second term, according to reports in US media on Thursday.

Biden will release a video to kick off his reelection campaign, according to rumours in publications like The Washington Post and CNN that cite unnamed sources.

The Post stated that this might occur on Tuesday, which marks the anniversary of the day in 2019 when Biden officially entered the contest to unseat then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2020. However, the newspaper emphasised that the plans were not set in stone and might be delayed.

When his second tenure ended, Biden would be 86 years old, making him the oldest US president in history. Trump is the Republicans’ current front-runner, increasing the likelihood that one of the most contentious elections in US history will be rerun.

Biden began his 2019 campaign with a video message. He was initially viewed by many as a failed politician who had left politics after serving as Barack Obama’s vice president, but he went on to secure the Democratic nomination and defeat Trump in a contentious election that the Republican party sought to rig.

Biden has hinted at his intention to run numerous times, most recently last week when on a trip to Ireland when he said: “I told you my plan is to run again.”

Supporters of Biden have noted that he is not always pressed for time. Biden has the advantage of having no significant competitor within his party, while Republicans are lurching towards a potentially messy primary fight.

Washington is also beginning a protracted and high-stakes political battle over raising the US borrowing ceiling, a conflict that might lead to the US defaulting on its debt and causing significant economic instability at some point in the upcoming weeks.
