A disturbing video of party leaders desperately calling for help as the US Capitol was ransacked added a chilling twist to Thursday’s session of the investigation into the 2021 insurgency.

Previously unseen footage showed how vulnerable lawmakers were as a mob led by former President Donald Trump ransacked offices and hallways.

During one of the frantic calls, Pelosi is informed that lawmakers are donning gas masks in preparation for a breach, and she asks her top lieutenant, Jim Clyburn, “Do you believe this?”

Chuck Schumer, who now leads the Senate despite being in the minority at the time, appeared equally irritated.

“I’m going to call the effing (Defense) Secretary,” the visibly irritated New Yorker tells Pelosi.

Minutes later, he calls acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and demands, “Why don’t you get the president to tell them to leave the Capitol, Mr. Attorney General, in your law enforcement responsibility?”

Pelosi is also seen on the phone with Virginia’s then-governor Ralph Northam while watching television footage of the chaos.

“They’re just breaking windows… they said someone was shot. It’s truly horrifying, and it’s all at the request of the President of the United States “she says

Pelosi and Schumer are pictured with Republican leadership figures at one point, all discussing how to send for assistance.

The footage, shot by Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra, was intercut with footage of a violent pro-Trump mob storming the Capitol.

“Congressional leadership recognised on a bipartisan basis that President Trump was the only person who could get the mob to end its violent siege of the Capitol, leave the Capitol, and go home,” panel member Jamie Raskin said during the hearing.

The committee was making their final public appearance before the midterm elections in November.

Trump is accused of masterminding a plot to derail the 2020 presidential election and of doing nothing to stop the ensuing violence in Washington.
