As plans for the queen’s state funeral advance, King Charles III will make his final trip to the four countries of the United Kingdom on Friday.

Charles and his three siblings, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, were scheduled to have a family vigil in front of the coffin while lines to see the casket of Queen Elizabeth II lying in state stretched over four miles (6.4 kilometres) long.

From 1830 GMT, the four royals will participate in the so-called Vigil of the Princes, which will last for 15 minutes.

After a record-breaking 70 years on the throne, the queen passed away last Thursday at the age of 96. British officials promised “a suitable tribute” to her on Thursday.

Tens of thousands of people stood in line for hours to pay their respects to the late monarch as a result of the emotional upheaval her passing has caused.

Charles, who had been the longest-serving Prince of Wales up until last week, was scheduled to take a helicopter early on Friday to travel to Cardiff.

The king, according to a spokeswoman, will meet privately with Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford during his visit and has a “lifelong commitment to the country’s people.”

Despite his loss, the king was “resilient and diligent” and “focused on leading the family, the country and realm, and the Commonwealth in sorrow for Queen Elizabeth II,” the spokesman continued.

“Unique and eternal”

On Monday morning, more than 2,000 people are anticipated at Westminster Abbey for the queen’s state burial, which will be the first one held in Britain in almost 60 years.

The casket will be taken by royal hearse from the service to the queen’s residence at Windsor Castle, west of London, where a committal service will be held in front of a large crowd of former and current members of the royal family.

The queen, her late husband Philip, parents, and sister will be buried together in a special ceremony attended exclusively by members of the royal family.

The Earl Marshal, better known as the Duke of Norfolk, who organised the funeral, told reporters at a press conference that “the queen had a unique and timeless position in all of our lives.”

‘Peaceful’

Four days of the queen’s body lying in state at Westminster Hall will be followed by the state funeral.

There is a seemingly never-ending line of mourners waiting to enter the spacious hall where the coffin has been since late Wednesday.

The Imperial State Crown, her ceremonial Orb, and Sceptre are placed on the coffin, which is wrapped in the Royal Standard flag, and there are tall, flickering candles at each corner.

Londoner Rupa Jones, 43, described the atmosphere as “overwhelming” after leaving the colossal chamber, the oldest section of Britain’s centuries-old parliament.

She and her aunt had waited in line for the little opportunity to stand in front of the casket for about seven hours during the night.

Guards stationed surrounding the podium in ceremonial attire, keeping a vigilant vigil, complete the gloomy ambiance within.

Many different gestures, such as bows or curtsies, the cross, or simply taking off their hats, have been used by mourners to acknowledge their presence in front of the coffin.

By early Thursday afternoon, there were more than four miles (6.4 kilometres) of people waiting along the south bank of the Thames River, and they were expected to wait all night.
