On Wednesday, US Vice President Joe Biden stated that it is “not time to give up” on discussions with Iran aimed at salvaging the 2015 nuclear deal.
“It’s not time to give up,” Biden stated during a press conference to commemorate his first year in office.
“There has been some development,” he remarked.
“The P5+1 are on the same page, but it remains to be seen,” Biden added, referring to the countries taking part in the Vienna talks.
Last year, talks between Tehran and world powers — the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and Germany — began, but stalled in June when Iran elected ultraconservative President Ebrahim Raisi.
In November, the talks were restarted.
Last Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned there were just “a few weeks left” to rescue the Iran nuclear deal, and that if the talks fail, the US will consider “alternative measures.”
In exchange for limits on Iran’s nuclear programme, the 2015 agreement provided much-needed reprieve from sanctions that had wrecked the country’s economy.
The unilateral departure from the deal by then-President Donald Trump in 2018 pushed Tehran to break out of its commitments.
