According to senior party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has decided to run in the March by-elections for 33 seats in the National Assembly. Imran Khan will run from every seat, Mr. Qureshi declared on Sunday. “We have chosen to participate in the by-elections,” he said.

In a previous statement made on Friday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) stated that the 33 by-elections would take place on March 16. Following Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf’s acceptance of the PTI lawmakers’ resignations, the seats became vacant.

According to The Express Tribune, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry had previously made the party chief’s decision to run in by-elections for all open National Assembly seats known earlier this month.

Imran Khan will be the Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate on these 33 seats, and the party will run candidates on all of the seats, Mr. Chaudhry stated in a tweet on January 17.

According to Mr. Qureshi, voters supported PTI during the July 17 byelections as well, and the party is hoping that they would do so again on March 16 by giving Imran Khan their support.

According to him, the ECP is required to organize elections within 90 days of a seat being vacant; failing to do so would be against the law.

According to The Express Tribune, the PTI leader claimed that they have no communication with the ruling class.

According to a report in the Dawn newspaper from earlier in the month, Mr. Ashraf accepted the resignations of 35 additional PTI lawmakers.

After Imran Khan, the party’s leader, was expelled from the National Assembly in April 2022, the PTI lawmakers all abruptly left the lower house of parliament.

Only 11 of the resignations, however, had been accepted by Mr. Ashraf, who announced that the other lawmakers would be called in separately for verification.

As the party signaled it might “challenge” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with a confidence vote, Mr. Ashraf finally accepted the resignations of Sheikh Rashid, the leader of the Awami Muslim League, and 34 additional PTI MPs after delaying the process for eight months.

According to Dawn, the resignations of Andaleeb Abbas, Asma Qadeer, Maleeka Ali Bokhari, and Munawara Bibi Baloch from the reserved seats were accepted.
