China declared today in a white paper that democracy prospects in Hong Kong are “bright,” a day after pro-Beijing candidates won a legislative election in the city with a record low turnout, following a massive Chinese crackdown on Hong Kong’s freedoms. Ji

The State Council stated in a white paper on developments in the former British colony that China has “established order” and “put democracy back on track” in Hong Kong.

Anti-Beijing and pro-democracy riots erupted in the Asian financial powerhouse for several years until Beijing imposed a broad national security statute on it in 2020.

The turbulence was blamed on “anti-China forces” and the “foreign foes” who backed them, according to the white paper, which also claimed that Hong Kong had “improved the system of democracy” by changing the legislative assembly election methodology.

Pro-democracy candidates were mostly absent from Sunday’s election, having declined to run or been imprisoned or pushed into exile.

The election was won by pro-Beijing candidates.
