Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, is scheduled to visit India in April 2021. This will be the UK Prime Minister’s first foreign trip since Britain’s departure from the European Union, his office announced on Monday, as part of efforts to expand the country’s prospects in the region.

As part of its Integrated Analysis of government policy for the coming years, the British government said that this visit would “tilt” its attention towards the Indo-Pacific region, saying that the region increasingly represented the world’s geopolitical hub.

Earlier in January, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was scheduled to be the chief guest at Republic Day, but his trip to India was canceled due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the UK and the spread of a new virus. He is now expected to travel to India in April.

“The Prime Minister spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning, to express his disappointment that he would be unable to visit India later this month as scheduled,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said on January 5.

PM Johnson’s office said at the time that he hoped to reschedule the visit before the G7 summit in June, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend as a guest.

Last month, Britain submitted a formal request to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), hoping to gain access to the 11-country bloc’s trade and power post-Brexit.
